Beauty Wars: Face Mists – It’s More than Just Bottled Water
You might not think they do much but we won’t be too quick to dismiss them. Here, we take five face mists ranging from drugstore finds to ones on the pricier end on a test drive. Were they worth it or nah?

Face mists. For some, the liquid escaping the nozzle and dissipating into nothingness plays out in their mind as a dramatisation of dollars and cents disappearing into thin air. They are the non-believers. What can spritz of spring water or rose water and its variants possibly do for the skin?
Take a seat. Let us beauty fiends educate. It might not seem like it but face mists really do serve a multitude of purposes. It’s a mid-day post-lunch pick (or wake) me up, a cooling respite from the merciless heat of the sun, an instant boost of hydration for parched skin, a soothing remedy for irritated skin…we could keep droning on and on about all the times we reach for a bottle of face mist. We have one on our desk at work, a travel-sized bottle that we rarely leave the house without, and another on our bedside table. Multiple bottles on deck. At all times.
Like with most skincare, face mists aren’t miracle potions that work overnight. But over time, hydrated, dewy skin would show for it. Here, we take five face mists that range from drugstore finds to the ones on the pricier end on a test drive. Our verdict:
Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist
If you’re sensitive to scent, rose-infused beauty products can be a tricky department to navigate. Admittedly, we don’t all share the same love for smelling like a living, walking garden. With that said, we were fully expecting to be put off by the Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist‘s rose scent. But our olfactory senses weren’t at all harassed by an overpowering hit of floral notes. While we could certainly catch a whiff of the floral scent, it was a gentle breeze that settled nicely onto the skin. Although on the pricier end, this concoction leaves a beautiful glow on the skin and we’re hooked. An added plus – it’s fully natural!
Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist
Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mist is one that lives up to its name. Luminous. Dewy. Check, and check. The fine mist settles evenly onto the skin, giving it a healthy glow. Concocted with super-hydrants like ginseng and an array of botanical oils, the paraben and sulphate-free formula delivers some serious hydration without leaving the skin feeling tacky or cakey. It works just as well over makeup as it does on a bareface.
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist
We’ve put almost the entire Glow Recipe range to the test. As we’ve concluded, some fared better than others. The Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist, however, takes the spot as one of our favourites from the entire range. Another on the list that delivers just as its name suggests, the nozzle delivers ultra-fine spritz of cool mist onto the skin. Formulated with a nourishing oil layer on top of water-based extracts, the mist hydrates the skin and locks the moisture right in. And it’s vegan! A word of caution – if you’re averse to fruity scents, keep scrolling, this is not the mist for you. Though we must add, the watermelon notes do not linger on the skin at all.
Mario Badescu Spritz Mist Glow Facial Spray with Aloe, Cucumber, and Green Tea
This cult favourite does not disappoint. With a very affordable price tag of $12 a bottle, this soothing concoction of aloe vera, cucumber, and green tea works wonders on dry, irritated skin. It also offers some respite for the skin on hot summer days. Our favourite thing about the Mario Badescu Spritz Mist Glow Facial Spray is the fact that there’s an entire range to pick from. If you enjoy the rose in your skincare, you can opt for the rosewater formula or if you prefer something with a little citrus in there, we’d point you to the orange blossom infused concoction.
Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray
Do not underestimate this drugstore find. It’s the stuff that Tinseltowners swear by. Diane Kruger, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rita Ora – it’s an impressive list. What resides within this inconspicuous white bottle is water collected from a natural thermal spring from the Occitanie region in southern France. Oh, so bougie! You might not be able to tell right off the bat but the Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray is a natural cure-all potion for SO many skin ailments. Trust us, this stuff works.
