President Donald Trump has threatened to “strongly regulate” or shut down social media platforms after Twitter applied a fact-check link to two of his tweets.
“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.
“We can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country,” Trump tweeted. “It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”
Twitter says the labels applied to his posts were designed to crack down on misinformation and unverified claims, linked to a curated page with links and summaries of articles describing how Trump’s claims on mail-in ballots are unfounded.
Trump has been known to push his own agenda, whether it is rooted in facts or not. If Trump does sign an executive order, it will likely be appealed in court.
