Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is calling for the arrest of now-fired police officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on unarmed Black man George Floyd until he stopped breathing.
Chavin has already been fired from his job following the killing, but Frey wants him arrested and charged with Floyd’s murder.
“I’ve wrestled with, more than anything else over the last 36 hours, one fundamental question: Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail?” Frey said during a news conference. “If you had done it, or I had done it, we would be behind bars right now. And I cannot come up with a good answer to that.”
Frey says he is working hard to get justice for Floyd.
“We are working with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner to expeditiously gather and review all of the evidence in the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman office said in a statement following pressure from Frey. “The videotaped death of Mr. Floyd, which has outraged us and people across the country, deserves the best we can give and that is what this office will do.”
