Slingback pumps have a bad rep. You might’ve dismissed them as the default footwear choice of a dowdy librarian or that nine-to-fiver who, quite literally, drags her heels to work on the daily. Whatever your preconceptions may be, leave them at the door. Meet the square-toed slingback that’s anything but the stuff of characterless formal shoes of a bygone era.
You could pin it on Miuccia Prada to take something so uncool and turn it around into the season’s hit. Remember those padded headbands from the ’80s that got a second lease of life on the Prada Spring/Summer 2019 runway? Yeah, who would’ve thought. We’ve seen slingback pumps from the same era get a facelift courtesy of Madame Prada in the past but its latest square-toed iteration claims the top spot.
It surely sent our vintage-loving hearts fluttering. And given its blocked heel and the support of its straps, the slingbacks are manageable heels even if you have three left feet. Plus, you could wear them to the office, take them out to dinner after, and your feet won’t be crying out loud for help! Who doesn’t love a practical heel that actually supports the feet while still showing off just enough to find itself in the sexy footwear department.
And given just now fuss-free these heels are, you could either dress with them up in leather pants for a fancy date with your man or in straight-legged jeans in a vintage wash for brunch with the usual suspects. You can’t quite go wrong. The only rule – whatever you decide to pair with them, you’d want your hemline to end above your ankles. You’d want the straps to be on full display.
