|They say the best runway is the one on the streets. The runway is where the official action happens, but it is on the streets that real style, worn by real people, is born. In “A Study In Street Style”, we turn the spotlight on some of the most notable street style stars of industry. If ever you’re dry on outfit inspiration, just check back here. We guarantee you’ll leave with at least a handful of styling ideas. That, or your (imaginary) money back.
It’s been about a year since we last attended fashion month, which for us, ended with a two-week quarantine. Since then, the streets have gone quiet save for a smattering of live shows in Milan last September and in Copenhagen the month prior. As the world retreated indoors, the ‘gram swiftly became our place of outfit inspiration. Not that we had anywhere to go but getting dressed was our attempt at clinging onto a vague sense of normalcy.
In a flood of sweatsuits and loungewear, Copenhagen-based stylist Emili Sindlev‘s playful outfit combinations are ones that’d stop you mid-mindless scroll. A chili red cardigan worn with purple slinky trousers and pink heels; an electric blue dress with a statement red bag; a teal dress with baby pink boots. An expert at colour blocking, Sindlev’s outfit mixes are unabashedly bold. It’s a play with punchy hues that just works. It’s the sort of fun that you’d want in on – a shot of dopamine that our wardrobes could use. There’s never a dull moment.
If you were to dissect Sindlev’s outfit anatomy, the colour formula typically comes down to this: two parts bright and one-part neutral. Unlike the rest of us, who’d typically lean towards classic beiges, black or white in the handbag department, Sindlev keeps her arm candy fun. It’s a similar sensibility she adopts in the footwear department. You might’ve never thought to put Barney purple and cobalt blue and yellow together in one outfit but Sindlev’s walking proof that the colours could in fact work wonderfully well together. Or if that’s way too out there for your monochrome-loving heart, you could start with a statement bag or shoe – see how that feels – before graduating to multiple.
Take a risk or two – there are no rules pinned to style anyway! And it’s the new year, if you’re considering a style revamp, Sindlev’s feed is where to look. It’s a gift that keeps giving. If you’re considering a walk on the bright side of life, here are some pieces that we’re sure have the nod of approval from Sindlev.
