āJust lost my taste and smell. Weird,ā Rice wrote, seeming to refer to coronavirus symptoms. āAlso, dropping a single at midnight.ā
Country singer Chase Rice is in hot water after he appeared to joke about having symptoms of COVID-19 in order to promote his new single.

āJust lost my taste and smell. Weird,ā Rice said, appearing to refer to coronavirus symptoms. āAlso, dropping a single at midnight.ā
In a follow-up tweet, the crooner clarified that he doesnāt actually have the coronavirus, writing, āOn a real note. Donāt have covid. But Iām dropping a single tonight.ā
Rice went on to tease the single, which is a collaboration with Florida Georgia Line. (One of the two bandās members, Tyler Hubbard, tested positive for COVID-19 last month.)
The singer wrote that he made the song āwith 2 guys that I learned a lot from.ā
āRespect the hell out of @FLAGALine,ā he continued. āAnd 10 years after we started doing music together and lived together, weāre at it again. Drinkin beer. Talkin God. Amenš¤š¼.ā

Rice was met with backlash over his apparent joke as many fans said itās in ābad tasteā and ānot funnyā to making light of the pandemic.
āIāve lost all my respect for you this year. Congrats. Iāll be turning off the radio every time it comes on,ā a user wrote, while another added. āReally in bad taste to joke about Covid. Thought you had learned something since the concert incident this year. Guess not. Hereās an idea: take all the earnings from this song and donate to Covid survivors or donate PPE to local hospitals. Do better, Covid is not a joke.ā
āIām legitimately glad youāre ok but itās NOT funny joking about having Covid. Especially to promote music. People are literally dying from it,ā another person wrote, before referring to Hubbardās diagnosis. āAnd Tyler might not find your joke funny either since heās actually HAD Covid.ā
The backlash marks the second time Rice has come under fire in recent months. Back in June, the country singer was slammed after he resumed touring and performed for thousands of fans at a concert in Tennessee despite the worsening pandemic.
According to TMZ at the time, Rice performed at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, Tennessee ā and while the 10,000-capacity space ādrasticallyā reduced the number of concertgoers allowed in, footage from inside the show proved there was very little social distancing and barely any masks in sight.
