Gucci’s New Jackie 1961 Bag Will Save You From the Tedious Search for a Vintage

Where do we even begin? Her perfectly coiffed tresses. Her signature oversized sunnies with the occasional scarf tied around her head. The pastel-hued skirt suit co-ords she topped off with matching pillbox hats. Jackie Kennedy Onassis is a bonafide style icon whose style is forever bookmarked in the pages of history. The former First Lady had plenty of stylistic signatures.

Amongst them was Gucci’s slouchy oversized hobo bag originally coined G1244. The elegant curvature of the bag punctuated by gold hardware slung on Kennedy’s arm crowned her impeccably sophisticated style in the ’70s and the ’80s. Photographed enough times on Kennedy, the carryall eventually came to be known as “The Jackie”.

Throughout the years, the vintage style has seen an array of reiterations. The latest of which comes by way of Gucci’s current mastermind Alessandro Michele. In typical Michele fashion, the Italian designer exhibits his knack for rendering pieces from the archives through his distinctively modern vision.

The Jackie 1961 first drew the attention at the men’s Fall/Winter 2020 presentation where it was paraded down the runway by both men and women. Michele’s rendition of the Jackie features clean lines that draw the eye to the carryall’s unique piston closure and the expert leather craftsmanship. Available in three sizes, small, medium and mini, the Jackie 1961 is available in black and red leather as well as GG Supreme canvas featuring the Web stripe. While the classic skins make for fuss-free everyday bags, the medium and mini versions in an extended palette of neutral-hued python and candy-coloured shades of pink lilac, butter, baby blue and soft pink are ones that have our attention.
