Pussycat Dolls’ Carmit on BLM, Surviving Quarantine, and Evolving as a Person

Carmit Bachar of the Pussycat Dolls is revving up for the Dolls’ 2021 reunion tour — and she got her feet wet by posing in an impromptu, pre-pandemic shoot on Maui that now graces the cover of the Summer 2020 issue of Lapalme magazine.

In the interview by Carlos Lacayo, Carmit touches on quarantine, saying, “In the beginning, it was tough to keep my composure, and recently I’ve experienced anxiety. I think it’s a cocktail for everything going on. We’re going through similar things when it comes to business or relationships or finances or friendships — it’s hard.”

“I think it’s more important than ever to show that women can support each other,” she tells Lapalme.

As the mother of a biracial child, 8-year-old Keala Rose, Carmit is also in a reflective mood about the Black Lives Matter movement, and how the country is reacting to racial unrest. “There were so many things running through our heads,” she says, referencing her husband Kevin Whitaker. “It’s a very delicate and fragile moment in the world right now, but I think truths are being revealed and true colors are coming out. I wanted to go to the protests and show my daughter what people are standing up for, but her father was not comfortable with that. There was a fear there understandably because there was an unpredictability, even when the protests were peaceful.”

“Sometimes you just think about things you have to do and are not present in the moment,” she warns in the article.

Carmit is looking to the future, hoping to host a show. She’s also making gains personally, revealing, “Holistically and spiritually, I’m expanding, growing, and evolving into a new, improved, and reinvented woman.”

“I didn’t have any fancy wardrobe — I just had what I brought with me,” she says of the gorgeous shoot.

Lapalme is out now.
