Listen – Setting Your Makeup Is Now More Important Than Ever

From powders to sprays, lo and behold our hall of fame inductees that work the best to keep your makeup smudge-proof.

|

With the quarantine measures gradually lifted and we ease into a new, face-masking wearing normal, you’re probably fast realising that having to wear a mask is a complete game-changer for your skincare and makeup routine that you might’ve spent months perfecting. Maskne is not merely a portmanteau coined by the beauty industry to move products off its shelves and having to don a mask throughout the day is quite frankly a nightmare if you have makeup on.

For those living in thick humidity like us here in Singapore or with oily skin, keeping your makeup from melting away is no walk in the park even on a regular day. Add a face mask into the mix and Houston, we have a problem. Going completely bare-faced might be an option for some of us but for the rest of us who haven’t emerged victorious from the genetic lottery, embracing our au natural beauty is, unfortunately, not always an option. On the days when wearing makeup is inevitable, we need all the reinforcement we can get to keep our makeup from not only sliding off in the heat but also transferring onto our face mask. It takes the best of the lot to do the job.

We’ve previously done a rundown of the best face primers, our favourite liquid foundations and put setting sprays to the test. To set you and your makeup up for the days, months and conceivable future ahead, we’ve rounded up a list of setting sprays and powders that have our seal of approval. You have our word, these would give you your best shot at smudge-proof makeup.

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

Anyone who knows anything about setting sprays, will know that the offerings from Urban Decay are undisputedly one of the best in the market. True to its name, Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray delivers its promise of holding your makeup in place for six to seven hours even if you have oily skin, which leaves us optimistic about how it’d fair under the moisture trapped underneath a face mask. However, if you’re sensitive to scent, its chemical smell might be off-putting. We’d suggest trying it out in-store before you commit to a bottle.

Supergoop! Defense Refresh (Re)setting Mist

As one would expect of a mist, the Supergoop! Defense Refresh (Re)Setting Mist finds itself on the lighter end of setting sprays. You might need a spritz or two more than the what you’d typically use but once you’ve covered your base, it does a stellar job in keeping the makeup in place. It’s an added benefit that the mist contains SPF protection. Toss it into your bag before you head out so you can top-up on that sunscreen throughout the day and keep your makeup intact. It’s a win-win situation.

Hourglass Veil Soft Focus Effect Setting Spray

The latest of our finds, the Hourglass Veil Soft Focus Effect Setting Spray is one we’d best describe as a long-lasting beauty filter. It lends an airbrush effect to your skin and keeps it looking that way throughout the day. A lightweight formula with a slightly dewy finish, it binds the makeup in place without drying out the skin. It’s also water-resistant and what that means is that it takes quite a lot for the spray to wear down even if you’re perspiring underneath the face mask and the merciless heat.

MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix + Mattifying Mist

The Mac Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+ Mattifying Mist is an oldie but a goodie. A lightweight mattifying mist that settles into a soft matte finish without drying out the skin. The thing with mattifying mists is that there’s a tendency for them to look uneven post application, a problem that we haven’t encountered with the Mac Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+ Mattifying Mist. If a matte finish is your thing, you’ve found your match. Oh, and, it’s also a two-in-one primer and fixer that you can use before and after you put your face on.

NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder

Do not be alarmed by the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder’s all-white facade. When applied onto the skin, the super fine pigments settle on the face like second skin but better. The light reflecting quality of the powder does wonders to blur out imperfections on the skin as it smoothens the surface with a dewy finish. Talk about a literal glo’ up – needless to say, without getting oily throughout the day.

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

The Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is one that we here at Team Yoyokulala have gone through multiple tubs of. Although definitely on the pricier end, a little bit goes a long way with this super fine setting powder. You’d be set with just a tap or two of the brush. Available in multiple shades, you won’t be left with a pale, ghostly cast that a mismatched powder (even if translucent) might leave you with.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder

Remember what we said about the Hourglass Veil Soft Focus Effect Setting Spray? The same applies to the brand’s Veil Translucent Setting Powder. The incredibly fine particles glide onto your skin and blur the imperfections in a few swooshes of the brush. Pores? What are they? We’re also obsessed with the finish of this powder which offers just the right balance between dewy and matte.
