A Running List of Sustainable Beauty Brands to Switch Your Makeup out to

From makers of refillable lipstick cases to 100-percent recycled packaging to glass bottles just begging to be reused. #noexcuses

We’re going green with our skincare and makeup routine – and we’re not just talking about the colour. Sustainable living is all the rage now, and it’s a good thing, too. I mean, there’s nothing cooler than saving our environment. (Quite literally, actually. Cooler. Global warming. Get it?) To help with our conquest on seeking out greener habits to help us live a little kinder, we’ll start with the one thing we treasure the most – beauty! Whether it’s your skincare routine or your daily makeup regimen, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to include sustainable and cruelty-free brands into your collection. To help us all live a little more responsibly, below are five of our favourite planet-friendly brands.

100% Pure

The name says it all. For the founders at 100% Pure, their main commitment is producing the purest products, and to promote a cleaner and healthier living. You’ll never have to make the gut-wrenching decision of choosing between beautiful skin or saving the environment – you can do both!

Adding on to their bomb list of miracle skincare products, 100% Pure also has a wide range of makeup, and it’s all fruit dyed. Yes, fruits. Their cosmetics are coloured from vibrant fruit, vegetable, tea and other plant pigments which contain an exorbitant amount of skin beneficial vitamins. Unlike other cosmetics which may be coloured with harmful dyes that contain lead or heavy metals, 100% Pure is all about – yes, you guessed it – being 100-percent pure with their ingredients.

That’s not all. 100% Pure is also committed to minimising their carbon footprint in all areas of their business. Their formulas are all 100-percent biodegradable, vegan and non-toxic. The packaging that comes with all their products are also BPA and phthalate-free, and they are all completely recyclable. Finally, the printing ink on their packaging? It’s non-toxic soy based ink. We are 100-percent obsessed.

Herbivore Botanicals

Championed by the It girls of the beauty world, Herbivore Botanicals offers amazing products for taking care of your skin in sustainable and recyclable packaging.

We’re not stopping there. Herbivore Botanicals utilises Lactobacillus Ferment as a preservative. Whether ingested or topically used, this type of culture has also been known for calming down inflammation really quickly. How cool is that?

If you’re on a journey towards a zero-waste lifestyle, you’ll be happy to know that their pretty glass bottles are infinitely recyclable and have removable plastic spray caps to help you reuse them again for other purposes. Or, if you’re a shelf junkie like me, the glass bottles will help you recreate that picture of a beautiful bathroom shelf you saw on Pinterest. It’s like a spa, except it’s right at home.

La Bouche Rouge

Based in Paris, La Bouche Rouge is all about superior craftsmanship and sustainability. You won’t be able to find micro-plastic anywhere in their formula or packaging. The brand makes lipstick cases — and you will only have to buy it once.

Refilling is such an important step in sustainability and we’re glad a luxury makeup brand like La Bouche Rouge understands. They’ve managed to come up with a magnetic leather and metal case that can be refilled as often as you like with any of the brand’s lipstick and balm shades. This completely cuts out any unnecessary packaging or waste you may generate whenever you feel like buying a new shade of lipstick. If you feel like treating yourself to a real splurge, you can choose to monogram the sleek lipstick case.

Although they’ve yet to find a clean, plastic-free alternative to leather that’s vegan friendly, La Bouche Rouge is still working on finding a viable option to meet all of their clients’ expectations. In the meantime, you can get a head start on your zero-waste makeup spree by purchasing one of their refillable lipsticks. For each lipstick sold, La Bouche Rouge supplies 100 litres of safe drinking water to the Eau Vive International Association.

Kjaer Weis

Kjaer Weis is at the forefront of luxurious and sustainable packaging. Their signature compacts are beautifully designed to be refilled over and over again. With their intelligent refill system, you’ll never have to throw out a perfectly working compact just because the product inside has finished. Kjaer Weis’s metal compacts are also inscribed with initials “KW” and housed in a red lacquer case similar to jewellery boxes. It’s a weighty compact that feels luxurious in your hand, and it’ll probably last you way longer than flimsy, plastic ones. It’s the perfect example of how sustainability, beauty, and luxury can co-exist.

To obtain the ultimate standard of luxury beauty, all their ingredients are also Certified Natural or Certified Organic. They believe in using makeup that works for your skin, not against it, and we agree!

Tata Harper

Completely free from GMO, toxins, fillers, artificial colours and fragrances, and synthetic chemicals? That’s Tata Harper for you. With their super rich and non-toxic skincare formulas, we’ll never have to choose between health and results or natural and high-performance ever again. To eliminate the amount of harsh synthetics from their making process, the ingredients are rubbed by hand on a screen to break them down. Tata Harper’s products are also directly shipped from their Vermont factory straight to customers. It’s their farm-to-face concept, and it doesn’t get any fresher than this.

Compromising on the environment for beauty? Not with Tata Harper. Their boxes are made with 100-percent recycled fibre. No trees were hurt in the making of their recycled boxes and that speaks volumes about sustainability.

W3ll People

When it comes to making the switch to clean beauty brands, there tends to be skepticism about how these alternatives measure up against the products we’ve been accustomed to. With an A-list makeup artist, cosmetic dermatologist and an entrepreneur behind it, W3ll People is created for long-lasting and high-performance wear. Its plant-powered range of makeup products work just as well, perhaps even better, than what you already have in your makeup stash. If you’re looking to dip your toe into the world of sustainable beauty, W3ll People will make for a promising start!

Ilia Beauty

One of the more prominent names in the sustainable beauty realm, Ilia Beauty prides itself on creating “skincare-powered makeup”. You can think of it as killing two birds (makeup and skincare) with one stone. Going a step further than only employing botanicals in their product ranges, Ilia Beauty is also big on active skincare ingredients and SPF in its makeup formulas. We’re all for products that perform double-duty and very much on board with the idea of makeup working its magic beyond surface level. We’re also happy to report that its minimal, oh-so Instagram-worthy packaging made from recycled aluminium, glass components and responsibly sourced paper also holds true to its commitment to sustainability.

RMS Beauty

As they are, sustainable beauty brands are better for the environment and the skin than whatever else is out there on the shelves but RMS Beauty strives to one-up even sustainable beauty brands by being even better. Its products are formulated with raw, food grade and organic ingredients in their natural state with controlled levels of heat to preserve the effectiveness and absorbency into the skin. The expansive range of products available at RMS Beauty essentially means it could be the one place to get all your sustainable beauty needs – both skincare and makeup – sorted. We at Team Kulala are fans of the Tinted Daily Lip Balm ourselves.

Bite Beauty

Clean. Vegan. Gluten-free. Cruelty-free. Canadian-based cosmetic brand Bite Beauty checks all the boxes of a sustainable beauty brand. What sets it apart, however, is the extensive range of products dedicated to lip care – you can take the hint from its name. From lip serums to masks to balms and scrubs, Bite Beauty covers all the bases when it comes to caring for your lip. If not anywhere else on the face, it makes sense to switch to sustainable products starting from what you apply on the lip. Because there’s a pretty good chance that you’re going to be ingesting at least some of that lipstick or balm, you’re going to want to pay attention to what ingredients go into. You might not be putting it into your body directly but that’s where some of it will inevitably end up.

Juice Beauty

Enter farm to beauty – a concept purveyed by award-winning California-based beauty and cosmetics brand Juice Beauty. A pioneer in the skincare and cosmetic arena, Juice Beauty produces its range of products organically grown ingredients sourced from its own farm. Ingrained into every step of the way of its product make, the brand’s commitment to sustainability is unparalleled. Its efforts have been widely acknowledged by industry players and won multiple accolades throughout the years. For honest ingredients made from the purest ingredients, Juice Beauty elevates sustainable beauty into a whole new level.
