If You Have Dry Skin, These Are the Clay Masks for You

Contrary to the word on the street, you don’t have to entirely stay clear of clay masks if you’re a sufferer of dry, sensitive skin.

The fundamental purpose of a clay mask is to clear out the gunk from the skin. As the clay dries, it settles into the pores, absorbing the oil and all the other stuff hidden beneath the skin unbeknownst to you. If you have oily or acne prone skin, it’s a cathartic experience, almost like being reborn with a new layer of skin all within a span of 10 minutes. But if you have dry and sensitive skin, you might have dismissed clay masks entirely from your skincare routine.

Clay masks have a bad rep for being too drying. While there’s a certain element of truth to it, it’s a blanket statement that doesn’t necessarily apply across the board. Just as there are heavy duty clay masks that leave your skin in desperate need for hydration, there are others that are gentle on the skin. Some, even formulated specifically for the needs of dry skin. Much like everything else with skincare, finding the right clay mask for your skin type (particularly if its dry) takes trial and error.

As sufferers of dry, sensitive skin, we have done our fair share of field work in finding gentle clay masks that go easy on the skin. A gentle clay mask might sound like an oxymoron but it’s very much a thing. If you’re apprehensive with venturing into clay masks for fear of aggravating your dry skin, we’d suggest always do a patch test first. Don’t go to town with a clay mask right off the bat. Apply it onto a small area to gauge your skin’s reaction. Only applying the clay mask on the parts of your face that require deep cleansing (for instance, the T-zone) is also something you could consider. Lastly, you can also wash off the mask before it dries your pores out completely to stay on the extra, extra safe side.

To our fellow dry skin warriors, we hope this narrows down your search for a clay mask.

Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque

At the top of our list, we have Aesop’s Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque. Coming from someone who has dry, sensitive skin, this clay cleansing masque from Aesop is hands down the most gentle of the lot that we’ve tried – and the Internet agrees. It does the job of a cleansing mask without excessively drying out the skin. In fact, it does the complete opposite. When you wash off the mask at the end of the 10 minutes, you’d be left with baby-soft skin you might not be able to stop running your fingers over. It also leaves behind a pleasant, lingering fragrance of lavender that is not nearly as overpowering as the heavy, musky scent most clay masks tend to assault your senses with. The Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque is an easy favourite!

Circumference Green Clay Detox Face Mask

Typically, when products specify its use for certain skin types, it’s typically sound advice. The skincare brands know exactly who the product is meant to work for. We skipped the advice for this one but we’re glad to report that we regret nothing. We took the gamble on Circumference’s Green Clay Detox Face Mask largely due to its nutrient-rich formula. Concocted from green tea leaves, rosemary extract and sancha inchi seed oil, the botanical formula doesn’t strip the skin but rather protects and repairs it. If you’d like to play it extra safe, we’d suggest doing a patch test first.

Origins Original Skin Retexturising Mask With Rose Clay

Rose as an ingredient in skincare hydrates and soothes – exactly what you would want to look out for if you’re a sufferer of dry and sensitive skin. The Origins Original Skin Retexturising Mask with Rose Clay is a real godsend. Unlike that of stereotypical clay masks, the gentle formula of this Origins’ iteration leaves the skin feeling smooth and refreshed. A thing to note, however, are the microbeads that you’d find in the mask. Although typically one to stay away from exfoliators with beads in the mix, the fine particles were sufficiently gentle to massage onto the skin without at all being abrasive. Lastly, needless to say, as with all things that have rose in its mix, the scent is reminiscent of a luxurious spa.
