Meet This Season’s Must-Have Polo Shirts that Are Nothing Like Your Dad’s

Meet the polo shirt like you have never seen it before. Elongating and flattering to the figure, you might barely recognise it as a polo.

Do you remember the oversized pink Lacoste polo shirt Cady wore to her first Pink Wednesday? The one she had borrowed from Damian but really it could have come out of any Dad’s or frat boy’s wardrobe? When you think polo shirts, you think a timeworn staple of your Dad’s wardrobe. It’s his Sunday uniform when he hits the golf course with his fellow polo shirt donning, Oakley sunglasses wearing middle-aged friends.

Just like dad sandals, they typically fell into that category of Dad (un)fashion. Polo shirts were not cool, period. Or so we thought – until we sat front row at Prada’s Spring/Summer 2020. The show opened with Freja Beha clad in a ribbed long-sleeved polo shirt. The piece was modern, minimal, flattering to the figure and none like what we had known of popped collar polo shirts from the early aughts. Consider it a reintroduction to the polo shirt.

At Jacquemus, Simon Porte Jacquemus approached the polo shirt with his signature flair for sex appeal. The result: a deep neckline we can see ourselves in as we bask in the crisp Spring sunlight on a French prairie. At Bottega Veneta, the elongated ribbed polo was Daniel Lee’s proposition of a contemporary uniform. These designer renditions give you reason to toss your prejudice against the polo shirt out the window and embrace its rebirth as a wardrobe staple for your everyday wardrobe.

Unlike your Dad’s ill-fitting polo shirts, these elongate the body and cling onto the shape of the body. If you’ve put in the work for that summer bod, you bet you’d want to show it off. But who would ever have thought in a polo shirt?
