The son of soul Legend Isaac Hayes is the latest celebrity to weigh in on Megan Thee Stallion’s record deal with 1501 Certified Entertainment, questioning why she or any other artist should be able to renegotiate their contract before even dropping her first album.
“Why should Meg @theestallion or any artist renegotiate their contract before they even put out their first album?” he tweeted. “The problem is the new people that show after you start poppin get in an artists head and turn them against the very people that put them on. That’s the problem.”
But he didn’t stop there. On an episode of It’s Just My Opinion, he went further into depth about the issue:
“When I see the same ol’ same tricks and mistakes being made by an artist, I’m gonna point ’em out ’cause I want to see her succeed. Artists need to be mindful of the 99 and the one percent,” he continued. “That means that granted, an artist is 99 percent of the success sometimes, right. They do all the heavy lifting, they’re out in front of the camera, they do all the traveling, they’re up late, they work hard, but there’s also this one percent that artists cannot forget about.”
He also gave 1501 credit for putting Meg on the map:
“If it wasn’t for them, there would be no you. There might be another version of you, but there would be no you.”
