2020 Golden Globe Awards: Every Must-See Moment That Went Viral on Social Media

The hottest names in television and film gathered at The Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, for what turned out to be a highly entertaining evening.

The show is known to be one of the more loose events in Hollywood, with booze aplenty and a more casual atmosphere than both the Academy Awards and the Emmys. This year’s event was hosted by Ricky Gervais — his fifth time so far — and he kicked things off with a few off-color jokes that were met with shock and surprise to everyone in the audience. See those remarks below!

The night’s guest list is a who’s who of Hollywood, including exes Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tiffany Haddish, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron and more. Below are the good, bad and viral moments that had Twitter talking!

Ricky Gervais Goes In Hard, Hanks Reacts

The host kicked off the show with a barrage of jokes aimed at those in attendance — and he did not hold back.

First, he called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC for letting him host in the first place. “Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars for some offensive tweets. Hello!” he joked, “Lucky for me, the Hollywood Foreign Press can barely speak English.”

He then called out Felicity Huffman, referencing her time behind bars by saying she made the license plate on the limo he took over to the show tonight. “It’s her daughter I feel sorry for, that must be the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to her,” he added, “and her dad was in
Wild Hogs.'”

One of his best burns was about Leonardo DiCaprio and his penchant for younger women. Talking about “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood,” Gervais joked Leo “attended the premiere and by the end his date was too old for him!” He added, “Even Prince Andrew’s like come on, Leo, mate. You’re nearly 50 son.”

His most crude remark came when he brought up Dame Judi Dench’s role in the critically-maligned “Cats.” Saying she claimed it was the role she was born to play, Gervais said, “she loves nothing better than plunking herself down on the carpet, lifting her leg and licking own [censored].” Apparently, the censored word was “minge,” British slang for pubic hair. He then said she chokes on “fur balls” before taking a swig of his drink and cracking, “This is the last time [I’m hosting], who cares.”

Tom Hank’s reaction face to Ricky’s opening remarks went viral on his own:

Kate McKinnon’s Sweet Ellen DeGeneres Tribute

Ellen picked up the Carol Burnett Award and “Saturday Night Live” star Kate McKinnon introduced her with a lovely tribute about how important the host’s coming out episode was for her growing up.

Watching the episode, McKinnon said she was “thinking ‘Am I gay?’ and I was. I still am. That’s a very scary thing to suddenly know about yourself,” she said. “It’s sort of like doing 23 and Me and discovering you had alien DNA. The only thing that made is less scary was seeing Ellen on TV. She risked her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth and she suffered greatly for it.”

Calling DeGeneres “brave,” she added that had she not seen DeGeneres on TV, “I would have thought, I’ll never be on TV, they don’t let LGBTQ people on TV.” She added, “and more than that, I would have gone on thinking I was an alien and I maybe didn’t have a right to be here. Thank you Ellen for giving me a shot at a good life.”

Accepting her award, she joked it was nice to come into a show knowing she would already win something. Talking about her longevity in the industry, she then joked she was actually straight.

“I feel like you’ve all really gotten to know me over the past 17 years, I feel like I’m an open book and I couldn’t have done it without my husband Mark,” she said, as the camera showed Portia de Rossi laughing. “I know it wasn’t easy for you or the kids, Rupert and Fiona, go to bed. I love you. That’s funny, because they’re in college now.”

She closed out her speech by talking about the “power of television” and seeing how her show inspires others to do and be better.

Beyonce, for Being Beyonce

Beyonce started trending during Kate McKinnon’s speech about Ellen just for appearing in the audience. Until this point, viewers didn’t know she was in the house as she did not walk the red carpet.

Showing up nearly an hour late and appearing next to husband Jay-Z, Knowles stunned in a low-cut black and gold gown — and the Bey Hive went wild!

Jason Momoa In a Tank Top

Like Beyonce, Momoa made Twitter go wild for his appearance in the audience as well, where he was spotted wearing nothing but a tank top at his table.

The camera panned past him as he congratulated “Succession” star Brian Cox on his win while the actor made his way to the stage. His guns were clearly distracting to not only Cox, but those watching at home.

Kerry Washington Turns Heads

Another one whose appearance set Twitter ablaze was Kerry Washington, who hit both the stage and red carpet in a black blazer with nothing underneath. She paired the look with a black satin skirt and silver chain that went down her chest.

She clearly stole the spotlight from Ted Danson while sharing the stage with him before presenting the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a comedy to Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Everyone Reacts to Brad Pitt, Even Jennifer Aniston

Viewers went wild for Brad Pitt every single time he appeared on the screen. The 56-year-old “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” star was effortlessly cool in his tuxedo and looked great next as he presented with his “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” costar Leonardo DiCaprio.

He also won big, picking up an award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie and had Twitter going wild for him as he gave his acceptance speech. During the speech, he made a “Titanic” joke about Leo before show producers also gave us what we’d all been waiting for — a reaction shot from his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston as he made a dating joke.

“I wanted to bring my mom, I couldn’t because every woman I stand next to, they say I’m dating and it’d just be awkward,” he cracked, as Aniston smiled and laughed from her seat.

Twitter was in love with it all and so are we.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Says What We Were All Thinking

President Barack Obama shocked everyone when he listed “Fleabag” as one of his top shows of 2019, because it meant he had seen one racy scene in particular featuring him. On the show, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s titular character masturbates to an old Obama speech.

While picking up her award on Sunday night for Best TV Series, Comedy, Waller-Bridge made sure to call that honor out. Thanking him for putting the show on his list, she added, “and, as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine.”

Getting huge laughs from the room, she added, “If you don’t get that, please watch Season One of ‘Fleabag’ really really quickly.”

Tom Hanks Gets Choked Up

Tom Hanks made everyone love him even more when he picked up the 2020 Cecil B. deMille Award during the show.

During his lengthy speech, he got seriously choked up as he thanked his family for all their support during his career, stopping his speech to collect himself after looking at wife Rita Wilson and their children sitting up front.

“A man is … [chokes up] … Sorry, a man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that,” he said to them. “A wife that is fantastic in every way who’s taught me what love is, 5 kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is and a loving group of people who have put away with me being away for months and months and months at a time. I can’t tell you how much your love means to me.”

He then went on to thank all of those he’s worked with through his illustrious career.

Patricia Arquette Gets Political

Patricia Arquette was the first star to really get political with her acceptance speech, bringing up the current situation in Iran and President Donald Trump’s tweets while picking up an award.

“I’m so grateful to be here and celebrate this, but also, I know tonight, January 5th, 2020, we’re not gonna look back on this night in the history books,” she said after thanking her costars and collaborators from “The Act.”

“We will see a country on the brink of war, the United States of America; a president tweeting out a threat of 52 bombs, including cultural sites; young people risking their lives, traveling across the world; people not knowing if bombs are gonna drop on their kids’ heads; and the continent of Australia on fire,” she continued. “So while I love my kids so much, I beg of us all to give them a better world. For our kids and their kids, we have to vote in 2020, and we have to beg and plead for everyone we know to vote in 2020. Thank you.”

Michelle Williams’ Pro-Choice Speech

The most passionate speech of the night went to Michelle Williams, who used her time on stage to make a powerful statement about a woman’s right to choose. She had the audience, presenter Tiffany Haddish, BFF Busy Philipps and viewers at home applauding her for speaking out.

“I’m also grateful to live in a moment in our society where choice exists because as women and as girls things can happen to our bodies that are not our choice,” she began. “I’ve tried my very best to live a life of my own making … one that I had carved with my own hand. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose.” It’s here Haddish shouted, “Preach!”

“To choose when to have my children and with whom, when I felt supported and able to balance our lives knowing as all mother’s know the scales must and will tip towards our children,” she continued. “I know my choices might look different than yours but thank God or whomever you pray to that we live in a country founded on the principle that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours.”

“Women, when it is time to voice, please do so in your own self-interests,” she said in conclusion. “It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don’t forget we are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us.”

Joaquin Phoenix Gets Played Off

Joaquin Phoenix won for Best Actor In a Motion Picture, Drama and gave one extremely-censored speech when he hit the stage.

He thanked the HFPA for having a plant-based menu this year, called for action in Australia, paused to honor girlfriend Rooney Mara and thanked those in the room who have given him “multiple opportunities” throughout his career. As music began to play him off, he chastised celebrities who “take private jets” to fly to Palm Springs and said he’ll “try to do better” himself in the future.

Chrissy Teigen was among the many who tweeted after he walked off the stage, sharing an old meme of herself as a reaction.
