Kanye West Canceled Twice on James Corden for ‘Airpool Karaoke’

James Corden has revealed what went down behind the scenes to create the epic Kanye West “Airpool Karaoke” — and apparently everything didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

While appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night, the “Cats” star revealed Kanye canceled not once, but twice before they filmed the musical segment for “The Late Late Show.”

Kimmel, who mentioned how he’s learned “things go according to Kanye’s plan,” expressed he was curious how the “Airpool Karaoke” segment first came about.

“[Kanye’s a] complex fellow,” Corden began. “This was actually the third time that we had tried to do a sort of Carpool Karaoke with Kanye. The first time he agreed and then he canceled a few days later, and you’re like, ‘Well, that’s a shame, but it’s fine.'”

“The second time that Kanye canceled Carpool Karaoke was so late in the day that I was driving up his road in the car, with all the cameras, and got this phone call saying it’s been canceled,” he continued. “I think I basically turned around outside his house and drove back to the studio.”

An unspecified amount of time later, on a Saturday, Corden received a text from Kanye, who said he wanted to film the show but “with the whole choir on like a bus or truck in L.A.” The late-night host agreed and the rapper said they would shoot the episode that Monday.

“I was like, ‘Well that’s difficult. Because we need to get a truck and permits…and the choir I think is a 150 people,'” Corden laughed as he recalled. “[Kanye] goes, ‘No, I think Monday will be great.”

Corden agreed, however, after talking with his producers, they realized they wouldn’t be able to get everything prepared in time. So they decided on Wednesday. When they reached out to Kanye, they heard nothing back…until Wednesday morning.

“At 11 a.m. Someone sends an email saying, ‘It’s not gonna happen today.’ Yeah no shit, it’s not gonna happen today!” Corden exclaimed. “And then, this is where [Kanye’s] brilliant. He just then goes, ‘I want to do it on an airplane.’ And we go, ‘Okay. Great yeah. Why not!'”

“To his credit, he and his team get the plane,” he continued. “Even as I walked onto the plane, I thought at some point somebody would go ”No it’s not gonna happen today.'”

Despite all of the drama that happened beforehand, the segment was not only successful but an unforgettable moment for Corden.

“Being on that plane surrounded by that choir, sitting with him, he was in a great place in the best mood,” he recalled. “I will never forget what that choir sounded like on that airplane.”

“I really thought, ‘This is a once in a lifetime thing that I’ll never ever forget,” he added. “It was an incredible moment.”
