Helena Bonham Carter on Asking Prince William to Be Her Baby’s Godfather, Advice for Meghan Markle

Helena Bonham Carter was an absolute delight during her appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” dishing about her experiences with the royal family, now that she’s an unofficial member — or at least playing one on the third season of Netflix’s “The Crown.”

When asked about that time she drunkenly asked Prince William to be the godfather to her child, Helena shot back, “I wasn’t that drunk!”

That said, though, she was “enough drunk for me not to drink anymore.” So we’re going to take that to mean pretty drunk. She said Prince William “wasn’t totally sober himself” and he was actually pretty gracious about the request.

The whole notion came to her “not that drunk” mind because she said she’d already burned through all of her friends on her first son. “Billy had 11 godparents,” she said. “I thought I could make up for it [for] Nell, who you know suddenly came along and we didn’t have any left. I thought, well if I get Prince William, that would cover [it].”

Unfortunately, he laughed it off, instead telling her, “You don’t want me to be godfather to your child.” And, alas, it never came to pass, though she apparently got a pretty funny story out of it, and apparently the end of her drinking days.

Later in the show, she was asked what kind of advice she might have for Meghan Markle, who’s endured unending criticism and scrutiny since even before she married William’s brother, Prince Harry.

“I don’t pay attention to it and I wish she wouldn’t have to,” Helena said of all the nasty things that have been written and said about Markle.

She went on to offer some advice and perhaps a new perspective on looking at it, as Markle has admitted she’s struggled with all of the attention. According to Helena, it’s all about reframing what they’re saying and realizing that “all that people think of you and write about you and whatever, that’s about them; that’s not really about her.”

She went on to say that the best advice she’d ever been given is to never put “your self-esteem in the hands of strangers.”

And for those people who are so busy trashing Markle, or really anyone in the public eye, “Unless you’ve met the person, don’t even voice an opinion,” Helena advises.

But perhaps the funniest moment of the whole show came in an impromptu moment when Andy Cohen asked her innocently what the last thing she texted was.

Oh, ‘Why am I on this show?'” Helena recalled. “To my publicist.”

When he asked what the response was she received, Helena said, “She just said, ‘Have a drink and get on with it.”

It sounds like good advice, but per that encounter with Prince William above, “I don’t drink.”
