Put on a happy face — because “Joker” has just broken another huge box office record.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Todd Phillips-directed film starring Joaquin Phoenix has hit the $1 billion mark, making it the first R-rated film to reach this milestone.
What’s even more impressive? “Joker” — which tells the origin story of the violent rise of Batman’s arch-nemesis — achieved the incredible landmark in just a little over a month since it’s release early last month.
The latest record is not the first for the film. “Joker” brought in $93.5 million in its first three days, becoming the highest October opening weekend in movie history. The movie also earned $737.5 million in its first three weekends.
“Joker” previously become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. The film surpassed the former record-holders: 2003’s “The Matrix Reloaded,” which brought in $828 million worldwide and “Deadpool 2,” which made $785 last year.
In addition to its incredible performance in the box office, the film has been fairly well-received by critics and fans alike. The DC comics blockbuster has also generated Oscar buzz, particularly for Phoenix’s performance as the titular role.
“Joker” is in theaters now.
