Mo’Nique is suing Netflix for both race and gender discrimination several news outlets are reporting.
The comedian filed the lawsuit on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Her lawsuit stems from an offer Netflix made her where they offered her significantly less money for a comedy special than her white and her male counterparts.
“Despite Mo’Nique’s extensive résumé and documented history of comedic success, when Netflix presented her with an offer of employment for an exclusive stand-up comedy special, Netflix made a lowball offer that was only a fraction of what Netflix paid other (non-Black female) comedians,” the lawsuit reads.
Mo’Nique called on her supporters to boycott the stream giants back last year after they offered her just $500,000 for a comedy special. According to the suit, Amy Schumer was “offered 26 times more per show than Mo’Nique.”
Netflix spoke with Complex who denied any wrongdoing.
“We care deeply about inclusion, equity, and diversity and take any accusations of discrimination very seriously. We believe our opening offer to Mo’Nique was fair — which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.”
