Lifetime TV is coming under fire. This week, they announced that they will begin filming a new biopic surrounding the lives of 1980s hip hop stars Salt N Pepa.
Initially fans were excited about the prospect of the biopic. But then Lifetime announced the three actresses that would play Salt, Pepa, and Spinderella.
And almost immediately, the excitement faded.
The main cast of the untitled series will include G.G. Townson as Cheryl “Salt” James and Laila Odom as Sandra “Pepa” Denton. Monique Paul will play the group’s DJ, Deidra Roper aka DJ Spinderella.
All 3 of the actresses are either lite skinned, or biracial. Here are the actresses:
Fans immediately pointed out that all three of the actresses appear to be much lighter skinned than either Pepa or Spinderella.
The fans are suggesting that Lifetime may have used COLORISM BIAS in hiring. Here are some of the comments:
Who is playing who? Pepa and Spin are brown skin, none of the ladies in the picture have that skin tone.
I saw folks griping about this. Not sure about spin but I highly doubt that Peppa wants to be played by a dark skinned woman.
