Drea Kelly, the ex-wife of shamed singer R. Kelly, has defended herself against critics who have accused her of speaking out against R. Kelly for a check – “there’s no price tag on any woman’s soul,” she said.
Drea sat down with Extra reporter Jenn Lahmers to help raise awareness on domestic violence. According to Drea, the fallout for taking part in Surviving R. Kelly was unexpected:
“It was really hard… the victim shaming, the victim-blaming, the backlash I was not prepared for.”
She continued: “I thought, ‘Here I am coming forward, this is about women… women’s empowerment, we’re in this together, and I just want to give validity to these women’s stories, and hopefully, if they don’t believe them, at least they’ll say the ex-wife… she’s speaking…’ It was the complete opposite.”
Drea is currently starring in Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta. A judge recently ordered that Kelly’s royalties would be used to pay child support to Drea.
“There’s no price tag on any woman’s soul… You can’t put a price on a life… At the end of the day, women are fighting for their lives… That’s why I often say you may love R. Kelly, but you might not like Robert,” Drea added.
