Nev Schulman Reveals He Was Catfished & Ghosted

“Catfish” host Nev Schulman once went on date with a woman not knowing she was only doing it on a dare — and then she ghosted him.

TooFab caught up with Nev as he was preparing to take on his fourth New York City Marathon, when he dished on his oddly ironic experience, considering he has a new “Catfish” spin-off, “Ghosted.”

After meeting a girl on Twitter, he took her on a super romantic date in NYC. From a jazz club for dinner, to a stroll through Central Park to laying under the stairs in Sheep Meadow, “it was a great date,” he said.

“But then, nothing. And I never heard from her again, which is crazy, because I thought we had a great date.”

Years later, he found out “it had been almost like a dare. Like ‘could she get the Catfish guy to go on a date through social media?'”

“I never spoke to her. Like, that’s kind of cool, but also kind of a bummer.”

Things turned out alright for him, however. He’s now married to his wife Lauren and they have two beautiful children.

As for Halloween for the cute family of four, Schulman told us, “We were talking about going as bagels. Each with our own personal preference of spread.”

“I was gonna be cream cheese and lox. Cleo likes jelly. My wife likes butter. We were gonna go as a family of bagels.”

But Schulman earns his bagels … with running.

Though this will be his fourth go at the 26.2 mile course, he tells us that he doesn’t necessarily love running but, it helps him “feel centered.”

“I don’t love running. Which is kind of funny to say,” Schulman admitted, “What I do love is the goal.”

“I love that every November I’m going to run the New York City Marathon. Which means for some time before that, depending on how aggressively I want to approach it, I have to train.”

Schulman said that his initial goal of running was to beat his dad’s marathon record, which he achieved on his third try in 2018. “[My dad] ran the NYC Marathon in 1982, a few years before I was born. He doesn’t know his exact time, because they didn’t have the same tracking devices as we do now. But he knows it was just under 3 hours.”

After clocking in at 2:58:54 in last’s years race, his motivation shifted. “Now my motivation, having become so involved in New York Road Runners as a result of running, is to kind of help raise awareness about the programs they do for kids.”

NYRR is a non-profit that aims to “help and inspire people through running.”

Schulman considers himself lucky to have had sports in his life as a kid and said “it’s been a real pleasure and honor to be a part of that organization and team.”

When asked about future running goals, he told us that “at last year’s NYC marathon, I did qualify for Boston 2020. So I do plan on doing that.”

“I’m now starting to look forward to, and I’ll probably train a little more seriously for, that because I would love to do well.”

With Boston just six months away, it will be interesting to see how he fits training into his hectic, “unstructured lifestyle.”

“Because of the nature of [Catfish], we’re on and off. We have no real schedule…I travel all over the country. There’s not a lot of consistency in my day-to-day. So for me to have the marathon and running as a tool, as something to create a constant for me…It really helps me feel centered, and kind of anchored in something. Otherwise my life can sort of feel rudderless and untethered.”

Speaking of “Catfish,” Nev told us all about one “heartwarming” episode that we may never get to see.

“It was a weird legal reason,” he said. “One of the people involved in the episode got into some strange legal trouble after we filmed. And it was unclear whether or not it would affect [the show].”

MTV decided to pull the episode and file an insurance claim to be reimbursed for expenses.

“I figured, ‘Okay, once this gets cleared up, we can air the episode,'” Schulman said. “But apparently once you don’t air an episode, and MTV makes an insurance claim on the episode, then you can’t air it.”

“Maybe some day I’ll leak it somehow,” he jokes. “It’s such a cute story.”
