McDonald’s Apologizes For Lynching Halloween Decorations

A McDonald’s in Massachusetts has apologized for displaying Halloween decorations depicting a lynching.

The offensive decor, which featured a black silhouette hanging from a tree branch, was spotted by North Andover resident Erik Pocock who posted a video online.

“It looked like a typical Halloween decoration. It said ‘Happy Halloween.’ It had some spiderwebs and some spiders and, like, a haunted tree and I was like: ‘Oh, that’s cute,'” he told WCVB.

“Then, you look closer and that’s not cute. That’s not right.”

“More like a lynching, but you could have taken it either way,” he added. “Extremely insensitive and offensive; they really should have thought twice about it.”

In a statement, franchise owner Chuck Lietz said: “We deeply regret that the decorations were on display and they were immediately removed as soon as the inappropriate content was identified.”

“Creating an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all our guests and employees is critically important to us, and we apologize for any unintended offense they may have had on our community.”

A vox pop carried out by the station was divided on whether or not the decorations were offensive.

Last week, Bed Bath & Beyond pulled its black jack-o-lantern decorations amid complaints they amounted to blackface.
