While there are way too many throw pillows embroidered with “Home is where the heart is,” the truth of the matter is this: Home is where all my random shit is. And if there’s no space to store all my clothes, art, books, furniture, etc., I don’t know how I’m also supposed to find a place for my heart. Whether you live in a dorm that’s the size of a shoebox or an apartment that’s, well, also the size of a shoebox, there are myriad small bedroom decor ideas that will help you amp up your room, give it some personality, the illusion of more space and, ultimately, make it feel like home. Because we all deserve to feel comfortable in our own bedrooms, right?

A couple months ago, after living in an apartment with ample storage space and the highest ceilings known to man, I moved to a new place with my roommate. While this new apartment was in a great location and featured a washer/dyer in unit (I know! I freaked out, too!), I lost a lot of storage, bathroom and closet space I was used to having for all my different items. Suddenly, I was stuck without a place to put everything and less square footage for all my furniture. So, I did what any reasonable person would: I figured out how to make the most of my small space.

Below, you’ll find five different ways to decorate your small bedroom—and how to shop the items I used, as well. Your bedroom should be an oasis, and someplace that exemplifies who you are as a person. No matter the size of the room, your personality should shine, baby.

I’ll admit it: I have a lot of—for lack of a better word—stuff. I like to collect sunglasses, books, art, etc. And when I moved into my new apartment, I wasn’t sure where all of it would go. So, I created an art and books wall to display some of my favorite things. It’s both an efficient use of wall space (meaning it keeps things off of the floor), but also a fun way to decorate your room and add personality.

Storage bins and baskets can be used for pretty much anything. I have these chic storage baskets from Garnet Hill (You can shop them below!) in several different sizes, and I use them in so many different ways. Not only do these storage baskets hold extra towels, shoes and blankets, I also use one as my laundry basket and to store my throw pillows at night. Having cute storage is key to opening up the space in a small room by keeping clutter off the floor and out of sight.

Make your bathroom a place you want to hang out by using soft towels (I’m obsessed with Garnet Hill’s bath sheets and hand towels.), a cute bath mat and storage that’s as chic as it is functional. My bathroom is small, has zero natural light and is covered in mirrors. I added colors I love and displayed all my favorite products to make the room as inviting as possible.

Even if you’ve been blessed with incredibly beautiful hardwood floors, a rug can add an air of coziness to any room. In the case of small rooms, too, a rug can really help to brighten up the space—especially if you’re stuck with a dark carpet. As soon as I put this pink bohemian rug down, my small bedroom looked better instantly. You’d be amazed at what a difference a chic rug can really make.

Choosing a light bedspread or comforter will instantly brighten up your room and create an illusion of more space in your room. Plus, adding cute pillows is another way to add personality to any size room.
