Angels Pitcher Tyler Skaggs’ Cause of Death Revealed

Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in a Texas hotel room last month, and now the 27-year-old’s cause of death has been revealed.

According to information obtained by The Blast, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner found that Skaggs died of a deadly mix of drugs and alcohol, including ethanol, fentanyl, and oxycodone. The report also included “terminal aspiration of gastric contents.”

On July 1, Southlake, Texas, police said in a statement that authorities received a call, just after 2 p.m., of an unconscious man in a Hilton hotel room. “Officers arrived and found the male unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

No foul play was suspected, but the death was under investigation.

Skaggs and the Angels were in Texas for a series against the Rangers that was set to launch the same day. The game was postponed.

The Angels said in a statement, “It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas. Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.”

Skaggs first landed with the Angels in 2009 as a first-round draft pick, and had played in the minor leagues. He was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010, and continued in the minors until making his MLB debut in 2012. He was traded back to the Angels in the 2013-2014 off season.

Tyler and Carli wed in December 2018. They did not have any children.
