The Best Setting Powders On Our Radar

It doesn’t matter if you’re team pressed or team loose, because we’re sharing our favourites for all your mattifying needs. These are the ones we always have on hand.

The time before setting powders became part of our arsenal were a dark, dark time. Creasing concealers, muddy contour, and an all around greasy face, setting powders have really come a long way at helping us put our best face forward. Whether for baking our underage area or as a light dusting to set our makeup, setting powders really are the only savior product that can help us to make sure my makeup stays exactly how we want it to.

After spending an hour (and sometimes even more) perfecting our eyeliners and cut crease eyeshadows, the least our foundation can do is to not budge. Well, setting powders help with exactly just that. They may be the last step in your makeup routine but they hold great power over how your makeup ages throughout the day. The right powder will keep your masterpiece creation flawless throughout the day, while also keeping your skin at the perfect balance between dewy and greasy.

Before you get overwhelmed by the amount of setting powders there are in the market, take a deep breath and keep scrolling because we’re here to help navigate your way through this. Below are some of our favourite powders to get you started so pick a favourite and cart it out, we promise they will keep the unwanted shine at bay for a loooong time.

Ben Nye Luxury Banana Powder

We all need a good banana powder in our makeup arsenal. It’s the perfect yellow toned setting powder that illuminates the skin with a subtle sheen that mimics natural dewiness the best. Great for layering and brightening, this setting powder works best on areas you want to naturally highlight. It also comes as a loose pigment so if baking is part of your daily makeup routine, Ben Nye Luxury Banana Powder will fit in just right.

However, a teeny tiny downside is the powder tends to melt off a little bit in higher humidity. So if you’re going to be out in the heat, bring along a little bit for touch-ups on the go.

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder

The moment we started using Fenty in our makeup routines, we simply cannot get enough. This setting powder might just be what our makeup dreams are made of. A superfine loose powder that feels like nothing on the face, the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder also keeps shine at bay for the entire day. Trust us, we really tried to sweat it out.

We could go on for days about why everyone should get one of these for themselves, but we’ll stop and let you be the judge of that. If Fenty hasn’t already stolen your heart with their insane makeup products, this could be the one to change your mind. For its price-tag, you will be getting a lot of product. Like, a lot, we’re still using it. Till. This. Day.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder

Pressed powders are not to be overlooked. Great for travelling, touch-ups on the go, and an all-around no-mess product, pressed powders are a godsend when it comes to doing your makeup on the go. This powder delivers exactly as its name says: an airbrush and flawless finish. A silky powder that melts into your skin flawlessly, it also offers a good amount of coverage because this isn’t a translucent setting powder. It also adds a soft filter-like effect to the skin which leaves it looking fresh and not at all one-dimensionally flat. A true win for pressed powders, we’ll be keeping this in our travel pouch.

Kylie Cosmetics Translucent Loose Setting Powder

When a cosmetic company is surrounded by controversy, it’s hard to allow ourselves to enjoy anything produced by them. So when it was time to review their setting powder, we had to set the bar really, really high. And we’re glad we did because Kylie Cosmetics Translucent Loose Setting Powder just took us on a rollercoaster ride of the century. And we’re talking about the good kind.

I usually apply my setting powders with a heavier hand which can sometimes leave my skin looking a little cakey with other setting powders, but that surprisingly did not happen with this. Kylie Cosmetic’s setting powder melted into my skin almost instantly, and when I topped it off with a setting spray, I can safely say that it was one of the better makeup days I had in awhile. It claims to be weightless, and it’s true. This isn’t the perfect powder for keeping shine at bay, but it does its job of making your skin look as natural as it can while still keeping your foundation intact.

Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder

Ah, a cult favourite and (almost) every makeup junkie’s go-to powder. We’re no exception. Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder has been a part of our top favourite setting powders for a long time now, and if you haven’t gotten one of these for yourself, you really should. No fluff, no frills, we’ll tell you all about the good stuff.

Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder is super fine, it feels silky to touch. It blends perfectly on top of any foundation without budging it, and it feels matte to touch even after a few hours. If you’re on the oilier side, a touch-up or two is necessary but after a quick dab, you can go back to looking fresh again. No flashback, and no caking, this loose powder will set makeup beautifully and add a soft filter over fine lines and imperfections.
