The Milan Fashion Week Digest – Episode 7

From the heritage-rich prints and references at Etro to the tear-jerking, emotional at Fendi, these are the ones you don’t want to miss.

Alas, Milan! Fashion week in this city used to last a week, but this season saw shows crammed into a short period of just four days, cutting short our pasta and burrata consumption sessions as well as leaving us with sandwich-in-the-car lunches.

If you’re just as short on time as we are, we summarised the top five collections of Milan Fashion Week. From the darker, unexpected references in Marni to Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection at Fendi, we bring to you the looks that won us over.

Marni

The first thing we noticed at Marni were the references to the red, white and black jester outfits. Patchworks of silk-satin panels were held together at the seams by rows of silver and gold rings of different widths. Boots were studded all over, and exaggerated long chains hung from every possible corner. Loose silhouettes were favoured, from exaggerated drapes to pleated skirts and slouchy boots we can’t stop spotting all season.

Etro

The rich heritage of a house is almost always the biggest source of inspiration for many designers. For Etro, prints of paisley, jacquards and tapestries stormed the runway, coming down in all forms, including their signature capes, jackets and modernised renaissance-inspired dresses. There were also preppy references like crests and stripes, yet maintaining the elegance and sophistication that all women desire.

Sportmax

Pink sand and a seemingly mismatched soundtrack of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony accompanied the models that stormed down the runway at Sportmax. But everything clicked into place the moment the non-existent curtains were drawn. Enlarged sleeves, dropped shoulders, oversized tailoring, all with the ever-present athleisure detailing and vibe. Now this, is what we call the perfect concoction of comfort and chicness.

Bottega Veneta

At Bottega, we saw Daniel Lee’s ingenious mind come to life with the experimentation and manipulation of Bottega Veneta’s rich heritage of leather. His preservation and respect for the house’s speciality was a breath of fresh air, and we couldn’t stop thinking about his inventive ways of changing up Bottega Veneta’s signature intrecciato weave. Fendi

Anticipation filled the heavy air in Fendi, as everyone piled in to witness the great mind of the late Karl Lagerfeld one last time. As expected, he didn’t disappoint. The collection was filled with the house’s constant elegance and feminism, continuing the ideas of innovation and reinvention. It incorporated modern, practical elements into iconic bags, yet keeping it poised and elegant. At the end, a tribute was paid to dear Karl, and the entire room couldn’t help but well up in tears.
