Elton John Calls A Tribe Called Quest The Seminal Hip Hop Band Of All Time

(AllHipHop News) Most Hip Hop heads recognize A Tribe Called Quest as one of the most influential and most prolific groups in Hip Hop history. A music icon is co-signing that sentiment.

ATCQ member Q-Tip appeared on Elton John’s Rocket Hour show on Apple Music’s Beats 1. During the conversation, John offered high praise for the emcee’s Queens-bred collective.

“I’m so thrilled for you to do this show. A Tribe Called Quest are probably the seminal Hip Hop band of all time.” stated the five-time Grammy winner. John later added, “A Tribe Called Quest that was so cool. It was kind of laid back but it was so funky. You were unlike any other Hip Hop band, I think. Would you say that?”

Tip responded, “I guess the thing with us is that we just always tried to kind of just be ourselves. Like we obviously had all of the guys who came before us, whether it be the Grandmaster Flashes or the Run-DMCs, that set a certain precedent.”

A Tribe Called Quest released six studio albums. Their first three projects – People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Marauders – are widely considered Hip Hop classics.

The group made history when 2016’s We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. That happened 20 years and 3 months after Beats, Rhymes and Life topped the chart, giving ATCQ the record for the longest span between top-selling albums for a Hip Hop act.
