(AllHipHop News) The trailer for Jordan Peele’s Us sparked a lot of interest for the forthcoming horror flick. It also spread across social media timelines because of the eerie rework of Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It” which played during the teaser.
“That song, it came pretty simple, I’m making a movie in Northern California, that’s a bay area Hip Hop classic and I wanted to explore this very relatable journey of being a parent [and] maybe some of the songs you listened to back in the day aren’t appropriate for your kids,” Peele explained to Entertainment Weekly.
“I Got 5 On It [Tethered Mix from US]” featuring Michael Marshall is now available to hear via YouTube. Composer Michael Abels is credited as providing the music for Us. He also spoke to EW about his work on the movie.
“There are times you want to foreshadow what’s coming and other times you want to deliberately not foreshadow what’s coming,” said Abels. “Some scares are the type of dread where you know it’s coming, and others aren’t. So we do spend a lot of time talking about what kind of scare something’s going to be, whether it’s a jump-at-you, or a slow burn.”
The official Us soundtrack is out today (March 15). Abel’s score, as well as songs by Janelle Monáe and Minnie Riperton, are part of the 35-track album. Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It [Tethered Mix from US]” and the original 1995 version are also on the project.
Peele’s second directorial release premiered at the SXSW festival on March 8. The Oscar-winning filmmaker also offered special #UsFirst screenings for black media figures and celebrities in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York City. The film’s nationwide theatrical release is scheduled for March 22.
Us stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Anna Diop, Evan Alex, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Madison Curry, Cali Sheldon, and Noelle Sheldon. The motion picture currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “universal acclaim” score on Metacritic.
