Saint Mary’s wins, bubble shrinks

Editor’s note: The NCAA tournament Bubble Watch has been updated through games of Tuesday, March 12.

Bubble Watch has told you and told you to watch out for bid thieves. But Saint Mary’s over Gonzaga by 13 points?

This is why we love March. Congratulations to Randy Bennett and the Gaels. Few teams that arrive in the field of 68 will have climbed a taller mountain to make it this far.

Now then, you’re wondering what this does to the bubble. Here are the numbers….

We’re currently showing the bubble as 26 teams competing for 16 available spots. Strictly speaking that means there are 26 teams below the “lock” level competing for 16 spots that won’t be filled by automatic qualifiers from one-bid conferences.

But you’re a savvy reader of Bubble Watch, so here’s still another way to look at the way the field is taking shape. You’ll notice eight teams are listed as “should be in.” Those teams are Syracuse, Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Iowa, Minnesota, Ole Miss, VCU and Utah State.
